Benders are characterized by beings who have the mysterious and powerful abilities to control a specific element within their world. A bender's element generally reflects where they are native to. An example would be firebenders come from the Fire Nation.
One individual has only one element, the only human able to use all four elements is the Avatar, and (s)he still must learn the other three, as (s)he is only raised knowing one.
However, some benders have unlocked secrets to their bending, adding special properties to them.
:: Waterbending
:: Basic bending.
A waterbender's movements are based upon the Chinese martial art Tai Chi, which exhibits slow movements and elegant forms that represent the flowing of water. Waterbending focuses upon the defensive nature of fighting, using the opponent's strength against themselves rather than physical attacks. Due to the fact that water exists in many different states, waterbenders can freeze, melt, evaporate, sublimate or condense water at will. This gives them a wide variety of abilities to use as defense. Waterbenders are more powerful at night rather than during the day due to their spiritual connection to the moon. Waterbenders are also at their strongest point during a full moon, and powerless during the lunar eclipse or when the Moon Spirit is in danger.
:: Healing.
Intermediate level.
Must either be taught, or born with the natural ability. {rare.}
Some waterbenders are born with the ability to heal using water as a catalyst. They are able to heal wounds and relieve sickness from patients by redirecting chi paths within the body. Within the Northern Water Tribe, females are all taught to heal. Not many waterbenders have this as a natural ability without being taught by a teacher, though it is possible.
:: Bloodbending.
Advanced level.
Only able to be used during a full moon. {Can only be sustained for two roleplaying posts in-character, and cannot be used to kill another character.}
Bloodbending is only capable of being used by the most skillful of waterbenders, and is rumored to only work under the power of the full moon. Bloodbending allows waterbenders to control the blood and circulation of a living creature, giving the bender complete control over it.
:: Earthbending
:: Basic bending.
Earthbending is based upon Hung Gar style of Kung Fu, which is made up of strong, heavy stances and rough, powerful movements. Earthbending stresses the practice of having patience, only striking at the perfect moment rather than wasting energy. Earthbenders are known to stand their ground, usually absorbing and intercepting attacks before overwhelming their opponent with their own skils. Earthbending is not limited to rock or soil alone, in fact Earthbenders can also control mud, slurry, sand, meteors, crystals, coal, and even metal.
:: Metalbending
Advanced level.
Although possible, metalbending is probably the most complex form of earthbending, and thus is an extremely difficult feat to accomplish. Only highly focused and advanced benders are able to control metal.
:: Sandbending
Intermediate level.
Sandbending is not as difficult as a procedure as metalbending is, though requires patience to master and time. Intermediate benders can learn to control sand over practice.
:: Vibratory Sensing
Intermediate level.
Some earthbenders can use a very strange, though useful, radar-like technique used to sense through the earth. Using vibratory sensing, an earthbender can feel heartbeats, people's positions, movements and sometimes are able to even tell if another human is telling a lie.
:: Firebending
:: Basic bending
Firebending's key elements to success is self-discipline, a firm, balanced form, breath control and general good health. Their form is based upon the Northern Shaolin style of Kung Fu which features quick, successive attacks and flamboyance, making firebending the most aggressive out of all the other bending arts. Breathing is extremely key within firebending; if a firebender is to lose control over their breathing, they would also lose control over their fire, causing disastrous results.
:: Lightning
Advanced level.
Cannot be used to kill others. Damage will be simply excessive shock and cuts, but no instant death. Also can be avoided at long range.
Firebenders are able to learn the art of creating and redirecting lightning. To succeed, a firebender, mentally, must be absent of all emotion and must have complete peace of thought, and phsyically, must be able to separate the energies of yin and yang. Rather than controlling lightning, as firebenders do with fire, they are only able to guide the element. However, a technique to redirect lightning has been formed, in which a firebender must direct their opponent's lightning into one arm, through the stomach rather than the chest, and out the other arm, sending it back to the enemy.
:: Flight
Intermediate level.
Skilled firebenders are able to sustain levitation by projecting flames from there feet, resulting in short periods of flight.
:: Airbending
:: Basic bending.
Airbending is based upon the Ba Gua style of martial arts, which is known for it's frequent circulatory motions, which makes it difficult for opponents to attack directly. While being the most dynamic of the arts, airbending lacks any fatal finishing techniques, making airbending an entirely defensive element. Airbenders enhance existing abilities with their bending, such as using the wind to slow down descents, run up vertical surfaces, leap through the air and move at high speeds. Airbenders are also able to create cushions of air to soften the falls of heavy objects, and can project strong gusts of air from their mouths.
:: Air Scooter
Intermediate.
The Air Scooter technique was invented by past Avatar Aang, and is performed by bending air into a sphere and balancing upon it like a top. The Air Scooter can be used to temporarily levitate within the air, scale high walls and move extraordinarily fast.
